Camp Elk River - Zimmerman, MN
Part Two
After a quick rest, some of the girls went to the man-made lake to swim. The rest hit the girl scout store to buy some souvenirs.
A few mood rings and friendship necklaces later, and they were off to more activities. Six girls went kayaking and four went biking on the trails.
The trip to the lake was quite a hike! Along the way we found some bee hives, some knocked over trees, lots of wildlife, and some really cool bugs.
We finally arrived at the lake to find the counselors waiting for us. They gave us some safety instructions and rules before fitting the girls with vests.
Once they were fitted, they were given oars and given some steering instructions.
The girls had to work together as a team to bring all of the kayaks down to the shore. They were incredibly helpful to one another and even did a bit of extra work to help their fellow scouts.
Time to get in! This is always one of the best activities for the girls. Every one of them starts out nervous about being alone in kayak and having the responsibility of making her own way through a pond (which happens to be filled with lake grass, lily pads, and fish!). Every time we've done this, at least one girl gets a little overwhelmed. In spite of that, they all thrive. This time we had three girls who had never kayaked before. Each of them made it all the way across the pond and back on their own. Seeing their confidence grow is one of the very best parts of camp. Ask your daughter about her time on the lake. Each one of them should be really proud of themselves.
While we were out on the lake, Andrea and a counselor took the rest of the girls on a bike ride through the trials. It sounded quite adventurous!
While waiting for the rest of the group, they started a rousing game of carpet ball!
After meeting back up, the girls started talking about their next adventure...archery!
