Hawkeye Soccer, Bugs, Badges and More!

Please do not feel overwhelmed by all of the options listed for our girls! I've put them here so we have one place to refer back to as the girls decide how much or how little time they want to spend on scouts.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa/Western Illinois' calendar just came out and is full of options for outings, earning badges, and having fun. The options that are age appropriate for our troop will be posted here. All can be done as a troop (when schedules permit) but the girls can also sign up individually (with an adult) for any of them as well.

More Activities in September

September 6th - Girl Scouts Day with the Hawkeye Soccer Team

The Hawkeyes will play Missouri at the Hawkeye Soccer Complex at 2665 Prairie Meadows Drive in Iowa City (behind the Hawkeye Hall of Fame). The game starts at 7pm and should be over around 9pm. There is no charge for the girls or their parents. If your daughter is interested, please let me know so I can register her by August 29th.

September 7th - Girl Scout Service Unit Swim Party
The party kicks off at 4pm at the UI Campus Wellness and Recreation Center. The girls will recite the GS promise and have a short presentation from the lifeguards before jumping in the pool. There is a large screen in the pool and they will show the movie "Oceans" (Rated G) during the party. Registration deadline is August 22nd!

September 21st - Bug Club

Insects are everywhere! Become an amateur entomologist and learn all about bugs with the Indian Creek Nature Center from 12:30-2:30pm. Girls will observe bugs in nature, learn the usefulness of many insects and visit an observation honey bee hive. They will craft a home for pollinators that they take home to their backyard. Brownies will complete most of the steps to earn the Bugs Badge. Let me know if your daughter is interested so I can register her by September 12th.

September 29 - Regina Girl Scout Tea Party!

Join other Regina Girl Scouts for an afternoon of tea and manners! This event will be held from 3:30-5pm at St. Patrick's Church in Iowa City. Come in your church clothes and enjoy tea and other treats. Registration deadline is September 19th.

Looking Ahead

The girls will have opportunities to participate in other activities this fall including a Badge-O-Rama day where they can earn 4-5 badges in a day. There will also be some fun overnights and plenty of Girl Scout craft activities at the Iowa Children's Museum.  I'll post these details in the weeks ahead. September and October Meeting information

September Party and Meeting

Don't forget about the pool party scheduled for all of the area Girl Scouts on September 7th! It will be held at the UI Rec Center pool from 4-6pm. The girls will watch the movie "Oceans" while swimming and enjoying treats. If you haven't RSVP'd to me yet, please do so soon. The girls have to be registered to receive a pool party patch.

Our first meeting will be held Monday, September 9th from 3-4:30 in the Regina Scout Room. This will be a big meeting for the girls! We'll review the Girl Scout Law and Friendship Handshake. They will also decide as a group how they will plan their activities and meetings in the coming months.

Remember, if your daughter is already working on earning a badge, please let me know so I can get it for her from the Girl Scout Store. Each of these accomplishments deserves acknowledgement and celebration so we'll have a little ceremony during meetings as well. If she hasn't started this process, she's in great company! :) We'll go over this process as well. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

October Meeting

Our October meeting will be held at Wilson's Apple Orchard! We will leave after school and plan to arrive at Wilsons around 3:45. They have planned an afternoon of apple education, tasting, and tractor rides for us. Apple turnovers and ice cream will be available that afternoon. We will try to do a brief meeting once we are done with the tour before heading back home. More details will be available soon.

Sunday: Last Day at Camp

Pancakes and Bacon over a Fire

Our morning started with a special camp fire breakfast. Zim, Hippo, and a girl from Ireland (whose name I always seem to forget!) helped the girls make fruit salad and pancake batter.

Then it was time to do the dishes (the girls ran around with plates in their hands to dry them!), clean up the camp and pack our things.

Arts and Crafts

The girls took a long hike to the Arts and Crafts cabin. They had several projects to choose from. Hopefully you enjoyed their creativity.

Ropes Course/Team Building

This was where the girls really shined. The ropes course is designed to promote team work, problem solving, and critical thinking. These girls had it! They had a lot of fun along the way too.

Passing a Hula Hoop around a circle.

The Human Knot! The girls knotted themselves up and then had to try to work together to untangle themselves.

Here the girls had to try to find a way to stand on a small platform at the same time. It took many tries and a few tumbles but they did it!

The Spiderweb game. Each girl had to crawl through the spiderweb without touching it. Once a girl went through one section of the web, none of the rest could use it.

Hugging Einstein!

Learning to spot one another which came in handy as we moved on to a lot of tight rope walking.

Learning more teamwork tips so they could walk together across the ropes.

Sarah and Kjirstin might have set a new record!

Madelyn and Sophia tried a few ways (hugging, hand holding) before they figured it out.

And onto the Alligator pit! The girls had to swing from one platform to the other while making sure the person behind them got the rope back. This seemed to be their favorite.

And finally, it was time to head home! The girls were already planning their return camping trip next summer. While Camp Conestoga will be closing for upgrades, Einstein assured them Camp Little Cloud is a lot of fun too!
